Gentle Readers, welcome! It’s time for another installment of Things I’m Currently Obsessed With. Previous installments can be found here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.
Despite the fact that I think the show’s tone is sometimes a little off (and recognize that might be the point), I can’t help but like this quirky, almost too-glib show on MTV about a really awkward teen girl who ends up in a sort of love triangle with two boys who are at the top of the high school food chain. Although I think the show relies too heavily on the love-triangle aspect of the show, it’s also got some smart writing, good acting, and great music (seriously). I haven’t started watching the second season yet, but as it’s just started, I expect to catch up soon.
What’s better than three geeks talking about TV, movies, and pop culture? Pretty much nothing, which is why this is my favorite podcast these days. Tara Ariano, David T. Cole, and Joe Reid weigh in on everything from the latest movie to the best/worst TV show. Of course the week I decide to feature this on the blog, the creators of the podcast have announced that they’re ending the podcast (two of them are moving to L.A. and have some sort of other project in the works). That being said, there’s still a lot of backlog podcasts to listen to, and if you want, you can follow them on Twitter (Tara Ariano is my absolute fave).
3. “My Fault” by Imagine Dragons
It’s not a single, so there’s no video for it, but this song by Imagine Dragons is one of my favorites right now. I don’t know why this song speaks to me so much, but it does. It’s my summer song, you guys.
4. Best Albums of 2012…so far
You can’t seem to go two clicks on the internet without stumbling over someone coming up with a list of the best albums of 2012…so far. As someone who consumes an immense amount of music (I average 3-5 albums a week. A WEEK), I pride myself on keeping current with what’s out, both mainstream and obscure. That being said, a lot of these lists suggest bands I’ve never heard of. Which is always a nice dose of humility for my music hubris.
I don’t know who was doing the picking over at The Guardian, but listing both Lana Del Rey and Nicki Minaj should be grounds for automatic disqualification.
There are some ones I agree with: Best Coast, Beach House, Japandroids, and The Men. Anything you’ve been listening to that you think warrants a space on the best of the year…so far?
5. Channel Orange by Frank Ocean
I’ve been listening to this album nonstop over the past few days. It’s definitely one of the best albums of the year. The entire thing is great, but I love “Pyramids” and “Super Rich Kids.” If you haven’t heard Ocean’s music before, you’re missing out. “Novacane” was my jam for a hot minute late last year, and this album is definitely the most exciting thing I’ve heard in a long time. Seriously worth checking out.
